Information we use

When you create an account, we receive your name, email address, Google account identifier, role, terms-acceptance record, and account activity. We keep contributions, edits, moderation decisions, moderator notes, and audit records. Our server and security providers may also keep limited logs such as IP address, browser information, requested page, date, time, response, and security events.

Why we use it

We use account information to provide sign-in and contribution features, moderate the directory, protect the service, respond to requests, and maintain an accurate history of changes. We rely on performing our agreement with account holders and our legitimate interests in operating a safe, reliable community directory. We do not sell personal information or use it for advertising.

Information about listed businesses

Directory entries may include the name and public business details of an identifiable sole trader, maker, or business owner. This information may come from contributors, business websites, other public sources, or the person or business directly. We use it in our legitimate interests to provide an accurate specialist directory. You may ask us to correct, review, or remove information about you.

Services we use

DigitalOcean hosts the app, database, logs, and backups in its London region. Cloudflare provides DNS, security services, approximate country detection from the visitor's IP address for the initial map view, and forwarding for messages sent to our contact address. Google provides sign-in, place search, Search Console, and the dedicated contact inbox. OpenStreetMap provides map tiles and may support address searches. These providers receive only the information needed to supply their services. Menswear Map does not store the approximate country result in its database or use it for profiling.

Some providers are international organisations and information may be processed outside the United Kingdom. We use their contractual data-protection and international-transfer safeguards where applicable. Contact us if you would like more information about those safeguards.

Cookies

We use only essential cookies for sign-in, security, and new-account terms, plus browser storage for your saved map country, current-tab filters, and acknowledgement of our cookie notice. We do not use advertising, affiliate-tracking, or optional analytics cookies. See Cookies and browser storage for purposes and durations.

How long we keep information

We keep active account information while the account and service operate. Directory information remains while it is relevant and suitable. We retain moderation and audit history only for as long as reasonably necessary to protect the map and explain important changes. Nginx logs have 14 daily rotations and system logs have a 30-day maximum. Database dumps are retained for 14 days and DigitalOcean backups for 28 days. We periodically review whether identifiable information is still needed.

Automated decisions

We do not use profiling or solely automated decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects. Contributor permissions follow disclosed contribution and moderation rules with administrator oversight.

Your choices and rights

You may ask to access, correct, restrict, transfer where applicable, or delete your personal information. Where possible, an account can be deleted or anonymised, but necessary moderation and audit history may remain and published contributions may continue without your personal details. Contact us to make a request.

Email [email protected] if you are unhappy with how we handle personal information. We will investigate and explain the outcome. You may also complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office.
